At Woodfield, our aim is to ensure we provide a maths curriculum for our children which is accessible to all pupils and provides them with the necessary mathematical skills, knowledge and confidence for them to be successful in life.
We aim to ensure that the mastery approach to teaching maths is followed, whereby children build a deep conceptual understanding of the content being taught and that they are fluent in the fundamentals of maths and can reason and solve problems.
Why do we teach maths? | How do we teach maths? |
We teach maths in this way because we understand the importance of our lessons and units being progressive and sequenced. The prior learning arithmetic tasks are planned in particularly to ensure key knowledge is regularly revisited so that it transfers into long-term memory. Furthermore, we recognise that the knowledge and use of mathematical vocabulary plays a crucial role in children’s understanding of maths, particularly in reasoning. | Maths is taught at Woodfield following the White Rose Maths scheme of work. All year groups follow the WRM long-term plans whereby areas of maths are chunked together to allow for a deep conceptual understanding of maths. The units are sequenced and progressive, allowing children to build upon prior learning and then within lessons, children are exposed to fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.
