Design and Technology

Subject Lead: Rebecca Baugh (Lead) and Chloe Langton (Deputy Lead)

The teaching of Design and Technology at Woodfield Primary School will ensure that by the time children leave at the end of KS2, they will be able to actively participate in the technological world.

Our Design and Technology Curriculum allows children to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts based on a well-thought, child-led design brief and specification. Meaningful and purposeful cross-curricular links are made with Art and Design, Maths and Science to support children’s breadth and depth of understanding.

Why do we teach Design and Technology?

How do we teach Design and Technology?

At Woodfield Primary School we recognise the importance of Design and Technology in enabling children to explore the technological world and actively participate in all aspects of the subject. It is evident that it is important for our children to learn new skills, develop these into designs, create their own versions and evaluate the use of their products.

Design Technology allows our children to solve real problems and participate in different aspects of the subject to give them a depth of knowledge and skills to transfer to secondary.

The Kapow Design and Technology scheme of work is designed to allow children to explore the 3 aspects of the subject; design, make and evaluate.

Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge and apply them to a range of outcomes. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.

Units in each year group are organised into these areas:

  • Structures

  • Mechanisms

  • Cooking and Nutrition

  • Textiles
