English

Subject lead: Michelle Lowry (lead) and Carly McCarthy (deputy lead)

We strive for children to have the ability to write legibly, with the appropriate use of Standard English, in order to communicate their thoughts and ideas succinctly.  We aim for them to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

We aim to foster an enjoyment of reading and to widen the children’s repertoire of reading materials, including non-fiction, poetry as well a range of fiction, including examples from our literary heritage.  We aim for our children to read easily, fluently and with good understanding.

Why do we teach English?

How do we teach English?

At Woodfield Primary School we recognise the crucial importance of studying the English language. We want pupils to leave our school as confident, independent learners.

We strive to produce skilled readers in order for them to function well in adult life, whether in fulfilling personal goals, progressing in the labour market or participating more widely in society.

Writing:

The approach to teaching writing is a mastery approach using the Pathways to Writing program. Our writing model consists of the following elements:

  • Immersion

  • Analysis

  • SPaG

  • Planning

  • Writing

  • Reviewing

Reading:

The approach to the teaching of reading at Woodfield Primary school has been developed from an understanding of the five elements which lead to successful readers:

  1. phonemic awareness

  1. phonics

  1. vocabulary development

  1. fluency

  1. comprehension

We use FRED to help with the delivery of our teaching of reading and include additional texts as required. Children read these texts as a class, individually or with a partner on a daily basis and also listen to teachers as ‘good models of reading’ in order to improve fluency.
