Celebrating Wider Opportunities
Here at Woodfield we value every aspect of learning both in and out of school and celebrate the variety of experiences on offer to our children. These can include music, arts, sport, child leadership roles and charity events.
Music:
Choir
Our school Choir has been established for over ten years and plays a pivotal role in making our children rounded members of society. There are many benefits to singing- it’s good for you emotionally, physically and socially. The children in our choir share lots of laughter and fun together as well as learning the art of good discipline and listening skills.
Throughout the year Choir attend many events and competitions including the Don Valley Festival, Robin Hood Festival and Music for youth. The choir is partnership with Rainbow Connection and throughout the year many of our children are awarded a “Golden Ticket” from Rainbow Connection which gains them entry into their Junior Choir.
Alongside the school choir we have the central Trust Choir and every year children in all Trust Schools audition with up to 6 children from each school being chosen as members. We are proud to say that the Trust Choir have won Music For Youth heats in Doncaster and performed at the Royal Albert Hall at the school proms – a totally magical experience!
Rock Steady Music:
We work alongside Rock Steady Music giving our children the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and become part of rock band. The thoroughly enjoy not only learning a new instrument but also performance skills.
Opera North Big Sing:
We are delighted to continue our partnership with Opera North inviting them into school to coach and train our pupils culminating in a performance for the local community and parents of Doncaster. In the past our children have been part of performances of The Water Diviner's Tales and Wonderland Restored performing with other primary aged children, the orchestra and professional actors of Opera North.
Sing Out:
Sing Out is a mass singing event which gives our children the chance to perform together alongside a live rock band at the The Dome in Doncaster. Songs include brand new compositions created especially for the event alongside modern pop songs. The children enjoy performing a live audience from across the city as well as working with children from other schools.
Ukulele:
All children in year 3 learn the ukulele as part of the universal offer culminating in a performance to the community. To further progress with their musical ability, children are able to join an after school ukulele club where they may continue to learn the ukulele or may choose to learn the guitar. This club supports our annual community barbeque with a special performance that is always a highlight.
Art
Family Art Sessions
We value our ongoing partnership with Kate Sully, Doncaster family arts coordinator, who works alongside families in school on creative activities. She has also led a range workshops for our children to create pieces of art that are displayed at community events such as Balby by the Sea. Our children's art work has been seen in The Linney Centre, Woodfield Park and DGLAM amongst other places.
DARTs:
Each year children in year 1 are able to enjoy weekly sessions with staff from DARTS who work with them and their teachers to develop creativity, oracy and emotional expression through drama activities.
Inspiring Leaders, Creative Learners:
Inspiring Leaders, Creative Learners is a project that will run for two academic years in conjunction with darts and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The project is strongly aligned to the Fund's priorities of supporting the needs of pupils, experiencing inequity and embedding learning through the arts in the curriculum and teacher professional development.
The project will benefit children in all The Rose Learning Trust's schools as well as building on it's existing relationship with darts with whom it has worked on previous successful projects such as Creative Classrooms and Doncaster Music Hub.
This project is focused on pupils' Communication and Language and Personal, Social and Emotional skills. It aims to build teachers' arts based practice, using drama and storytelling to improve core skills such as focus, empathy and vocabulary.
PE and Sport
Rose Learning Trust sporting festivals:
Each year we are invited to take part in a range of sporting festivals across Key Stage 2 including hockey, tag rugby, football, dodgeball and athletics. Children work together as a team, showing sporting skills and exemplary conduct. They enjoy being competitive and equally recognise the value of both taking part and representing school.
Extra-curricular sports clubs:
We offer a range of sports clubs within our after school club portfolio including dance, multisports and a termly games focused club which changes through the year. These clubs are open to all children whilst alongside them we offer an elite club for children identified as having particular talent with a sport. This is led by our specialist sports LSA and supports children beyond the school curriculum.
Putting the fun in FUN-draising
We understand the importance of our children learning to show show empathy and support for those in need in our community and beyond. As part of annual calendar we plan in a range of fundraising opportunities for local and national charities as well as specific school projects. We use these events as opportunities to widen children's knowledge of the needs of others and ways that we can help. We always keep in mind the potential financial impact on parents of contributing to a large number of events through the year. Many events across the year focus on participation, fun and awareness with no financial burden.
Celebrating success beyond the classroom
Embedded in our school celebration assembly each week are our 'Magic Moments' where we invite children who have been part of events outside of school to share them with us. This can be a medal for running a race, a certificate for grading at martial arts, recognition of charity involvement or musical attainment. We enjoy celebrating family life as a school and encourage other children to talk to their families if they are interested in these experiences. Front and centre when you enter our school is our 'Celebrating our Success' display where you will see the diverse range of acheivments and engagements of our children beyond the classroom.
